If you haven’t been to McNair Park in a while, the place looks almost unrecognizable.
The City of Pompano Beach has wrapped up a long list of upgrades at the Northwest Pompano fixture, transforming it from a dependable neighborhood park into one of the most fully featured recreation campuses in the city. The improvements officially took effect this month, with the new operating hours kicking in on April 2.
What’s been added
Walk past the entrance and the first thing you’ll notice is the new artificial turf football field, complete with bleacher seating, a press box and a concessions area. It’s the kind of setup that turns a Friday-night practice into something that feels closer to a Friday-night event — and it gives Pompano’s youth and adult football programs a flagship home field.
Behind the field sits the new 6,000-square-foot recreational clubhouse, the most ambitious piece of the project. Inside you’ll find a fitness center, a yoga and group-fitness room, restrooms, and meeting space the city plans to use for community programming. Members of the city’s senior, youth, and after-school programs are expected to be the early heavy users.
The basketball courts have been resurfaced with new hoops, and the parking lot has expanded to fit roughly 270 additional spaces — a meaningful number given how packed the lot used to get on tournament weekends.
New hours
As part of the rollout, McNair Park has shifted to scheduled-only access during portions of the day. The facility is now closed to the public unless there is a scheduled event, practice, or program happening on-site. The Parks & Recreation Department posted updated signage on April 2 and is asking residents to check the city’s parks page or call ahead before stopping by for casual use.
What’s next
The McNair upgrades are part of a broader push by the city to modernize neighborhood parks and bring the kind of programming and amenities that historically required a drive to a regional park. Insiders close to the project say a couple more cosmetic touches — landscaping, signage and lighting tweaks — are on the punch list before a formal community ribbon-cutting later this spring.
