April is almost done, and Pompano Beach is primed for what many longtime residents consider the best month of the year. May in southeast Florida sits in a sweet spot — the humidity hasn’t yet reached its full summer weight, the tourist crowds have thinned, the water is warm enough for comfortable swimming, and the city’s event calendar is at its most active before the quiet stretch of summer sets in.
A few things to put on the May radar right now. Music Under the Stars closes out its season on May 8 at the Great Lawn, and based on the attendance trajectory of the past several shows, the finale is going to draw a big crowd. Get there early if you want a good spot on the grass.
The restaurant scene is in good shape heading into May. Lola’s on the Water has hit its stride. The Vault has its operation running smoothly. The established spots on Atlantic Boulevard are entering the period when they typically do their best work — experienced staff, refined menus, and a customer base that’s more local and appreciative than the transient spring crowd.
Fishing reports are strong and expected to hold through May as the water continues to warm. The pier, the surf zone, and the offshore reefs are all producing well, and the transition from spring species to summer patterns usually brings good diversity to what anglers are landing.
