Saturday morning in Pompano Beach in late February is one of those things that’s hard to justify staying inside for. The weather is as close to perfect as it gets, the Green Market at 50 W. Atlantic is running strong, and the city has a weekend energy that builds through February.
The market this time of year has a full complement of vendors. Citrus season is winding down — peak was earlier in the month — but the late-season grapefruit and oranges are actually some of the sweetest of the year, and the local growers know it. Buy the last of the blood oranges while you still can.
After the market, the options from there depend on what kind of Saturday you want. The beach is 10 minutes east and will be reasonably uncrowded before noon. Old Town’s restaurant and coffee options are worth a second cup and another hour. The Pier is free and has a clear-day view that stretches south toward Fort Lauderdale.
Saturday afternoon: the Intracoastal has pontoon rentals and kayak tours running on weather like this, and the backwater areas north of Atlantic Blvd. see manatee activity in February when the water temperature is right. It’s worth paying attention on the water this time of year.
There’s no particular event this weekend — no festival, no concert, no reason to go somewhere else. Sometimes that’s exactly the right context for a Pompano Beach Saturday.
