While the waterfront gets most of the attention in Pompano Beach, a quieter creative transformation has been taking shape a few blocks to the west. The stretch of downtown Pompano around Old Town has been gradually attracting artists, galleries, and creative businesses — the kind of organic cultural development that cities spend millions trying to manufacture.
The old warehouse and light industrial buildings near Sample Road have proven attractive to studios and creative businesses for the reasons they usually do: affordable space, high ceilings, and proximity to a downtown that’s developing rapidly without yet pricing out the early movers. It’s a familiar pattern from other Florida cities, but Pompano’s version has some distinctive local character.
The Pompano Beach Cultural Arts Center has been a catalyst for this development, both by drawing audiences to the area and by signaling municipal investment in creative programming. Events at the center bring foot traffic that spills into the surrounding blocks, benefiting the independent businesses that have taken root nearby.
The Old Town Untapped venue is a good example of the kind of creative-meets-community anchor that can hold a developing district together. Events there have ranged from live music to art markets to community gatherings, building exactly the kind of diverse programming calendar that neighborhoods like this need.
It’s still early. The Pompano art district is more potential than establishment at this point. But the bones are there, and the trajectory is encouraging.
