April has been delivering for anglers at the Pompano Beach pier, and the early-week fishing report from regulars is consistently encouraging. The spring migration has the pier productive on multiple species right now, which is relatively rare and worth noting.
Pompano fish are still showing in the surf zone along the beach break adjacent to the pier. The classic rig — fluorocarbon leader, pompano jig or sand flea — continues to produce. The best window has been the two hours on either side of the tide change, particularly during morning sessions when the beach is less crowded and the fish are feeding aggressively.
Off the end of the pier, the kingfish bite has been intermittent but when it’s on, it’s been very good. Several fish over 20 pounds have been landed in the past two weeks. Live bait fished on a slow drift is the preferred approach, and the pier bait shop has been keeping live goggle-eyes in stock for those targeting kings specifically.
Spanish mackerel have been plentiful and active throughout the water column. Light tackle with small spoons or jigs produces consistent action, and the fish are eating aggressively enough that beginners are landing them regularly, which is a good sign for the overall bait presence in the area.
If you’ve been meaning to get out to the pier and haven’t made it yet this season, this week is a good opportunity. The conditions are right.
