Back to school in Pompano Beach arrives on Monday, August 10, when Broward County Public Schools opens the 2026-27 year. Whether your kids attend Pompano Beach Elementary, Pompano Beach Middle, Blanche Ely, Pompano Beach High or one of the charter and private options in town, a few things have changed this year. Here is the short version.
Key dates for the school year
The first day of school is August 10, 2026, and the last day is May 28, 2027. Thanksgiving break runs November 23 through 27. Winter break is December 21 through January 1. Spring break falls on March 22 through 26, 2027. Student schedules were posted on August 5, and bus route details go out during the second week of August. Bell times can shift from year to year, so check your school’s website before Monday morning.
New rules for back to school in Pompano Beach
The biggest change is the phone policy. In grades K through 8, phones and smartwatches must stay away for the entire school day. High school students may use devices only when a teacher directs them to for class work, or during their assigned lunch period. Expect schools to enforce this from day one.
The second change is on the road. A new BusPatrol stop-arm camera program starts on August 10. For the first 30 days, drivers who pass a stopped school bus will get a warning. Beginning September 9, the fine is $225. If you drive Atlantic Boulevard, Dixie Highway or Powerline Road during pickup and drop-off, slow down and watch for flashing red lights.
Free meals and new programs
Breakfast is free for every Broward student at every school, with no application needed. Lunch is also free at the district’s 141 Community Eligibility schools. At the other 80 schools, families can apply for free or reduced-price meals. Full-price lunch runs $4 to $4.50 depending on grade.
The district is also launching 13 new magnet and innovative programs this year. They include a STEAM aviation track, an AI in media program, marine mechanics and several sports academies. Details are on the district’s back-to-school page.
Local reminders for back to school in Pompano Beach
Traffic near schools will be heavy for the first two weeks, so leave early. Afternoon storms are common in August, and pickup lines back up fast when it rains. Finally, hurricane season peaks in September. Keep an eye on the district’s alerts, and make sure your contact information is current in the parent portal so you receive closure notices.
